The trilateral meeting between the Armenian, Russian and Azerbaijani leaders on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement was constructive, Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan said Monday.

YEREVAN (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijan's Ilham Aliyev met in St. Petersburg to discuss the escalation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Azerbaijani breakaway region with a predominantly Armenian population.

"Today's meeting was quite effective, and I can say with some caution that it was held in a constructive atmosphere," Nalbandyan told reporters.

Baku echoed this positive assessment of the meeting, saying it could help bring peace process back on track.

"The Azerbaijani side hopes that this meeting will push for peaceful settlement of the conflict in Karabakh as soon as possible," Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told reporters.

The Nagorno-Karabakh frozen conflict escalated on April 2. Baku and Yerevan have accused each other of provoking hostilities that led to multiple deaths on both sides. The parties agreed on a ceasefire on April 5.
