German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed hope on Monday that UK voters would support their country's continued membership of the European Union at the upcoming referendum.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, EU foreign ministers held a meeting in Luxembourg, where the issue of the Brexit referendum was high on the agenda.

"I hope that there will be a majority of British citizens who choose to remain in the EU," Steinmeier said following the meeting.

He also said that he personally, as well as his European colleagues, had generally expressed a "specific concern" over a possibility of the United Kingdom leaving the bloc.

Saying goodbye to Britain in the bloc would be a "major turning point" that would drastically change the European Union, Germany's minister said.

UK citizens are set to vote in the referendum on the United Kingdom's EU membership on Thursday.
