MOSCOW (Sputnik) – NATO last revised its nuclear deterrence and defense posture in the 2012 Deterrence and Defense Posture Review, at a time when the NATO-Russia Council was meeting regularly, and the alliance was considering further reducing its requirement for non-strategic nuclear weapons.
NATO has been reinforcing its military presence in Europe, particularly in the Eastern European states, since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, citing Russia's alleged interference in the conflict as a justification for the move.
Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusations, calling NATO's military buildup near Russia’s borders provocative.
"We will continue to have credible and safe and secure nuclear deterrent as part of NATO’s defense posture," Stoltenberg told a briefing.
