Senior US, Chinese Officials Discuss North Korea, Maritime Security

US Deputy Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and China’s Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui co-chaired the 6th Strategic Security Dialogue (SSD) meeting on Sunday to discuss North Korea-related issues and maritime security, the US State Department said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) —The two sides reportedly pointed out that the dialogue “was beneficial to enhancing mutual understanding.”

“[The SSD] included candid, constructive discussions between the two sides on strategic security issues – including maritime issues and the DPRK,” the statement reads.

Tensions over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs escalated after Pyongyang said on January 6 that it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test and put a satellite into orbit on February 7, violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community in both cases.
