Ex-Chief Negotiator Alloush to Advise HNC on Security After Resignation

Former chief negotiator for Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Mohammed Alloush will remain a member of the HNC and will serve an expert in the security and military fields, the HNC said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Alloush resigned from the position of chief negotiator over failure of the UN-mediated intra-Syrian peace talks to bring a political settlement in the Arab country.

"Alloush will remain a member of the HNC and continue to work as an expert on the security and military fields, providing necessary support to the negotiating team within his area of expertise," the statement said.

On Monday, HNC member Naser Hariri told Sputnik that Alloush would continue taking part in the intra-Syrian talks as the representative of the Jaysh al-Islam movement in the HNC.

The participants of the UN-mediated talks include the government and three opposition groups — the Riyadh-formed HNC, the Moscow-Cairo and the Hmeimim groups. The latest round of the talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The HNC walked out of the negotiations, citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
