GENEVA, May 27 (Sputnik) — Representatives of Russia in the International Syria Support Group’s (ISSG) task groups will hold on Friday a briefing on the situation in the war-torn country for the Spanish Foreign Ministry at Madrid’s request, a Spanish diplomatic source told Sputnik.
"Co-chairs from the Russian Federation of the ISSG’s task forces on humanitarian access in Syria and observance of the regime of the cessation of hostilities are invited to Madrid to hold a briefing on the situation in the SAR at the Spanish Foreign Ministry on May 27," the source said.
He added that the sides would discuss issues of compliance with the ceasefire in Syria, humanitarian assistance and the political settlement of the long-standing conflict.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups. A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27, which does not apply to terrorist organizations active in the country.
The ISSG, co-chaired by Moscow and Washington, was formed in November 2015, shortly after the beginning of the Syria peace talks, as a panel of countries seeking to end bloodshed in Syria.
