Canada's Foreign Minister Stephane Dion criticized a proposal to enact the Canadian version of the US Magnitsky Act, local media reported on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Sergei Magnitsky was a lawyer in the London-based Hermitage Capital Management hedge fund. He was arrested in Moscow in 2008 on tax evasion charges and later died of heart failure while in prison. An official investigation into his death was closed due to lack of criminal evidence.

"I note that we are able to stop the perpetrators of this crime with the current Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, because it is checking the eligibility at the border. We have this capacity," he told the Commons, the lower chamber of Canadian Parliament, explaining that any additional legislation in the field is redundant as reported by The Globe and Mail.

US Petition to Scrap Magnitsky Act Against Russians Reaches 100,000 Goal
In late 2012, the US law intended to punish those allegedly responsible for Magnitsky’s death was enacted. This law prohibits entrance to the United States and usage of the US banking system for the  individuals Washington believes are responsible for the death of the Russian lawyer.

Russia responded to the Magnitsky Act by issuing a travel ban for a number of US officials linked to human rights violations. Some of the officials have been involved in the construction and maintenance of the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
