Obama, Australian Prime Minister Discuss Need to Approve TPP Deal in 2016

President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull discussed by phone on Wednesday the importance of getting the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement approved by US Congress by the end of 2016, the White House said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In February, the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam signed the TPP free trade agreement.

"President [Obama] underscored his commitment to securing [US] Congressional approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership this year," the release stated.

The two leaders also discussed counterterrorism, maritime disputes, the Paris climate deal and the need to work together to address the global oversupply of steel, according to the release.
