WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Gottemoeller’s main piece of advice to the next US president, who will take office in January 2017, is to "nurture and enhance predictability" to meet national security priorities.

"We have a lot of problems with the Russians, but in areas that it is in our national security interest, we need to work with them in the most effective way possible, and the most effective way possible is as one of its inherent necessities, mutual predictability," Gottemoeller said at the Center for Strategic International Studies.

Despite the chilling of relations, the United States and Russia continue work on strategic arms reductions through the New START Treaty. Both sides appear on track to reduce their deployed strategic arsenal down to 1,550 warheads by February 2018.
