The level of terrorism in Afghanistan has increased since the US invasion in the country, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the broadcaster RT in an interview published Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Karzai is in Russia to participate in the two-day annual Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS). The agenda of the MCIS includes combating terrorism, as well as security challenges in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Central Asia.

"Where we are today, with more extremism, with more terrorism, with more radicalization of the youth [than it was before the US invasion], not only in our region but beyond the Middle East and up to Central Asia," Karzai said.

According to the former president, the United States must somehow explain how everything went wrong.

Afghanistan continues to be in political and social turmoil as several militant groups have taken advantage of the instability that has persisted in the country since the 2001 US-led invasion.

The US-led NATO combat force withdrew from Afghanistan in December 2014. However, more than 10,000 US military personnel remain in the country as part of the Resolute Support mission.
