Moscow will consider US ideas on how to strengthen the ceasefire regime in Syria, a source at the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday, commenting on the statement by US State Secretary John Kerry.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier, Kerry said that Washington hoped to agree with Moscow on a new system for monitoring the cessation of hostilities in Syria in the coming days.

"If the US side has ideas on the ways of strengthening the cessation of hostilities, including through monitoring, we, of course, will consider them," the source told RIA Novosti.

The Russian and US military are working in constant contact on the Syrian affairs, he noted, adding that both countries' Foreign Ministries were also involved in the dialogue on the issue, including on the top level.

Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27. It does not apply to terrorist groups such as Daesh and al-Nusra Front, both outlawed in several countries, including Russia.
