UN Believes Syria Talks Continuing Despite HNC Pullout - Damascus Group

The United Nations does not believe that the intra-Syria talks had ended because of the withdrawal of the opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) group, head of Damascus delegation to the talks Bashar Jaafari said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Jaafari and UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy met earlier in the day in Geneva.

"Deputy Special Envoy Ramzi confirmed the position of the UN that the talks are going on despite the decision of the HNC," Jaafari told reporters after the meeting.

On Monday, HNC asked UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to suspend their participation in the ongoing round of talks, blaming Damascus for violating the cessation of hostilities on the ground in Syria.
