The Ukrainian Justice Ministry has begun the process of extraditing Nadezhda Savchenko, sentenced to 22 years in Russia for the murder of two Russian journalists, Ukrainian People’s Front party leader Maxim Burbak said Tuesday.

KIEV (Sputnik) – Earlier, the Ukrainian Justice Ministry has received an appeal from Savchenko, sentenced to prison in Russia, to start procedures ensuring her return to Ukraine.

“Yesterday, the Ukrainian Justice Ministry received a request from Nadezhda in which she asked to start the procedure of returning her to Ukraine. Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has already begun working,” Burbak said during a parliament session.

Savchenko was sentenced in late March to a 22-year jail term in Russia for her part in killing Russian journalists in eastern Ukraine, and refused to appeal the ruling, but Ukrainian authorities have been trying to organize her possible exchange for detained Russian nationals.
