Assad's Fate Should Be Discussed After Deal on Political Transition

The issue of Syrian President Bashar Assad's future should be raised at Intra-Syrian talks only after reaching an agreement on political transition, Qadri Jamil, one of the leaders of Moscow-Cairo opposition group, told Sputnik.

GENEVA (Sputnik) — Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with numerous opposition factions and extremist groups fighting the Syrian army seeking to topple the government of President Bashar Assad.

"Let's see what [UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan] de Mistura will suggest. We will speak about the transitional period. So far the issue of Assad's fate has not been raised. This issue, if it is to be raised, should be raised in the end of the transitional period. Let's discuss everything step by step," Jamil said, asked whether the issue of Assad's fate would be raised at this round of talks.
