Finland Supports Minsk Group Efforts on Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict

Finland supports all the effort made by the co-chairs of the Minsk Group of negotiators to solve the conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, the Finnish ambassador-at-large to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia told Sputnik on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Following the outbreak of renewed violence in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Minsk Group's co-chairs — Russia, France and the United States — announced that a meeting will be held in Vienna on April 5 to discuss the situation. Finland is one of the participating members of the Minsk Group.

"Finland is a sort of an ordinary member in the Minsk Group. Finland supports the co-chairmen's efforts to try to solve this crisis, to find the solution," Christer Michelsson said.

On April 2, Azerbaijan and Armenia reported intensified fighting in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, which had been in place since 1994.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh began in 1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought to secede from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, before proclaiming independence after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991.
