France expects the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Nuclear Security Conference set to take place in Vienna in December to be an occasion to renew dialogue with Russia on nuclear security, a source at France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik)- On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin's non-participation in the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC is because of the lack of mutual action during the preliminary preparation.

"There will be the Nuclear Security Conference in December 2016. I hope that our delegation will engage with Russian delegation in dialogue, and that the outcome will be positive," the source said on the margins of the fourth Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC on Thursday.

Russia has decided not to attend the Nuclear Security Summit, which is hosted by the United States.

The source noted, however, that Russia is a highly important stakeholder in nuclear security worldwide.

"This summit is not the end of the story," the source underscored. "The conference in December is a good opportunity to restart dialogue on nuclear security, and I hope Russia will play an important role."

The source added that another opportunity for Russia and France to communicate may be the tenth anniversary of The Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear terrorism, which is co-created by Russia.

The source also observed that while the Russia-France dialogue has become more occasional following Moscow's withdrawal from the Nuclear Security Summit in 2014, the two countries have maintained dialogue within the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, the UN 1540 Committee and the IAEA.
