The cross-border transit of freight cargo trucks between Russia and Poland could be suspended after April 15 if the sides fail to agree new permit quotas for 2016, Russian Deputy Minister of Transport Nikolay Asaul said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In February, the Russia-Poland permit quota standoff caused a pileup of heavy trucks at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border because of suspended freight traffic.

"As to the permit quota, the number of permits for the current year, we have not yet agreed on this issue," Asaul told RIA Novosti on Thursday following the first day of negotiations on the permit quotas in the Polish city of Gdansk.

Freight transport between Russia and Poland was suspended on February 1 because of a lack of an agreement on quotas. A temporary agreement was reached on February 19 and will be in force until April 15.

"The discussions continue, but the possibility of failure to agree remains, leading to a temporary suspension, which could not be ruled out after April 15," the Russian deputy transport minister said on Thursday.

The temporary agreement between Russia and Poland should be replaced by a permanent one once the two sides analyze the work of the freight carriers after the temporary deal expires, according to Asaul.
