BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Since Turkey lodged its EU membership bid in 2005, the European Union has opened 15 chapters out of the 35 required to join the bloc. In December 2015, Ankara said in wanted to open five more chapters.
"This discussion on new chapters will take place in the coming hours," Hollande said after the first day of the EU summit in Brussels, adding that the accession chapters were not brought up during the Thursday discussions.
On Wednesday, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker told the German Handelsblatt newspaper that he did not expect Turkey to become a member of the European Union in the next 10 years.
The European Council is hold a two-day summit in Brussels on March 17-18. EU leaders are expected to reach an agreement on Friday on an EU-Turkey action plan that envisions a one-for-one exchange of undocumented migrants for approved refugees.
