GENEVA (Sputnik) — UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Monday that he would report on the results of the first day of the new round of intra-Syrian talks to the UN Security Council later in the day.
“Today, this afternoon… I will be briefing the Security Council [on the talks],” de Mistura said at a press conference.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Islamic State, which is banned in several countries, including Russia.
The first round of the UN-brokered talks began in Geneva on January 29 but were postponed on February 3 as the parties were unable to reach a compromise on a number of issues. The opposition and government delegations blamed each other for the breakdown of the talks.
