WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In February, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria. The ceasefire took effect on February 27. The agreement does not apply to groups operating in Syria that are designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

"In Syria, the cessation of hostilities has led to a measurable drop in violence in the civil war," Obama stated.

Russia has been conducting airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria at the request of President Bashar Assad since late September 2015.

The US-led international coalition has also been carrying out airstrikes against Daesh in Syria since September 2014, without the approval of Damascus or the UN Security Council.
