The opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) upended the People’s National Party (PNP) in parliamentary elections, according to results published on the Electoral Commission website on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – With nearly 100 percent of the February 25 votes counted, JLP leader Andrew Holness is poised to replace Prime Minister and PNP leader Portia Simpson-Miller with a margin of less than 1 percent.

Holness, 43, briefly served as prime minister from October 2011 to January 2012. Simpson-Miller headed the Jamaican government in 2006-2007.

According to the Jamaican Constitution, the British monarch-designated Governor-General appoints the prime minister based on recommendations made by lawmakers.

Since 1989, PNP has formed the cabinet of ministers with a parliamentary majority.
