'This is the Beginning': Russia-Backed Ceasefire Could Bring Peace to Syria
GENEVA (Sputnik) — The cessation of Syrian hostilities came into effect at midnight on February 27 Damascus time, after the United States and Russia reached an agreement earlier in February on a ceasefire between the Syrian government and opposition groups in order to help end the country’s civil war.

Ban and Lavrov are expected to discuss the implementation of the Syria truce, brokered by Russia and the United States, as well as the upcoming resumption of intra-Syrian negotiations.

Later in the day, the Russian foreign minister will meet with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to discuss talks on Syrian reconciliation which are to resume on March 7 in Geneva.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow plans to discuss Turkey’s violations of the ceasefire regime in Syria with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura later on Tuesday in Geneva.

“As far as I know, there are violations occurring from the Turkish side. Kurdish positions are being fired upon. This is all being discussed. There will be a meeting in Geneva today with Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov and de Mistura. We plan on discussing this topic at that meeting,” Bogdanov told RIA Novosti.
