Syria Welcomes Russia-US Ceasefire Deal, Maintaining Anti-Daesh Fight
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Syria ceasefire deal brokered by the United States and Russia on Monday will help define the role of Turkey in the international attempts to solve the Syrian crisis, an Austrian member of the European Parliament told Sputnik Tuesday.

“I think it is a great opportunity, and also this agreement could cast countries like Turkey in a clear role,” Austrian Freedom Party’s Franz Obermayr said.

He stressed that Turkey has been in a very undecided situation, opposing on one hand the Islamic State militants, and on the other hand “playing a very dark role by bombing the only effective ground soldiers, the Kurds, The Kurdish army in Syria and Iraq.”

“So for the Turks it could be very helpful that Obama and Putin made a clear proposal what should be a target,” he continued.

He added that the deal could also alleviate the migration woes in Europe, as people who fled from Syria amid the war could potentially return to their homeland.

On Monday, Moscow and Washington announced that an agreement on cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the armed opposition factions had been reached. The agreement will come into force on February 27.
