The European Commission currently has no "plan B" in the event of the United Kingdom leaving the bloc, EU Finance Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Britons are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Cameron and 27 of his European colleagues secured a deal last week to grant the United Kingdom special status within the bloc.

Moscovici said in a Sunday interview with the France 5 broadcaster that the European Commission was not thinking about any "plan B," as it was anyway unlikely to help in worst case scenario.

He added that acquiring a "plan B" would also mean giving up on the generally accepted "plan A," which is the United Kingdom being part of the "united Europe."

According to Moscovici, the referendums in Europe are dangerous, especially during the current age of "existential" problems concerning debt crises and issues of national determination.

Later on Monday, Cameron is scheduled to address parliamentarians to gain the support of UK lawmakers for the country to stay in the European Union.

Cameron pledged to hold a referendum on the issue of Britain’s EU membership as part of his party’s campaign during the general elections in May 2015.
