WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Relations between the United States and Cuba began to improve after Obama announced in December 2014 a historic change in the US policy to include loosening of the US congressionally mandated trade and travel embargo on Havana.
"I think it’s going to be one more step in creating the trust that has been lost for so many years," Franco stated on Thursday. "I think this is going to be an ongoing process for both, for Cuba and for the United States."
Earlier on Thursday, the White House said Obama was scheduled to visit Cuba on March 21-22 in a first official visit by a US president since 1928.
"I think the fact the president is going to Cuba is just creating more awareness of everything that is happening around Cuba. The president is very much welcomed and appreciated in Cuba, he has a great support there," Franco added.
The two countries reopened embassies in their respective capitals in the summer of 2015, after more than 50 years of diplomatic non-engagement.
