The recent telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama indicates that the two leaders want to make an agreement on Syria reached at recent international talks work, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference said Sunday.

MUNICH (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the Kremin announced that Putin and Obama held a telephone conversation, focusing primarily on Syria.

"It seems that these two very important and key leaders have actually agreed that they are going to make this new accord, or at least to try to make this work," Wolfgang Ischinger said in a statement closing the Conference.

The International Syrian Support Group (ISSG) session took place in Munich earlier in the week with representatives of Russia, the United States and over a dozen other states as partipants. The talks resulted in the adoption of a final communique that calls for humanitarian access to be provided swiftly to all besieged areas in Syria and sets a one-week deadline for measures to be implemented to end the hostilities in the country.

The ISSG was formed in November shortly after the beginning of the Syria peace talks in Vienna as an international format aiming to resolve the internal crisis in Syria, where a civil war has been ongoing since 2011, with forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting against several opposition factions and terrorist groups including Daesh and al-Nusra Front.
