Less than a week after the US defense secretary announced a major boost in spending on the Pentagon's activities in Europe, rumors have surfaced that NATO plans to expand its military presence in Poland and the Baltic states in a move that, as Russia has repeatedly warned, will further undermine regional peace and security.

The initiative was outlined on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources in the US and NATO. The official announcement is expected to come next week following a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.

"Officials said the size of the force and precise national contributions won't be determined until later this year. But they said defense ministers are likely to approve a mission to oversee and enlarge what are currently bilateral deployments to Poland and the Baltic States," Julian E. Barnes noted.

Earlier this week, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced that the DoD plans to request $3.4 billion for fiscal year 2017 (up from $789 million for the current budget year) to reinforce its military presence close to Russia's western borders. The funding will help the US to rotate more troops in the region, conduct more war games and preposition additional military hardware.

These moves, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, "create grounds to implement military plans against Russia and take practical steps to push military infrastructure closer to Russia's borders." Zakharova described the manner in which these initiatives are carried out as "aggressive" and added that NATO uses a non-existent threat from Russia as a pretext.

Russia will respond with "fitting political, diplomatic and military" measures to Washington and NATO's "unfriendly" attempts "to exert pressure" on Moscow, Zakharova noted.

The United States and its partners in NATO have increased their military presence in Eastern Europe and the Baltics following the outbreak of a civil war in Ukraine, which the West largely blames on Russia. Moscow has repeatedly said that it is not a party to the conflict and does not pose a threat to anyone.

they worried about E.U break up and Russia getting all those countries into RF. Whish many want BACK like in Crimea.
That's their hidden agenda 1. The 2 is an attack on kaliningrad or Crimea. They need ready to battle groups close to Russian borders, Like operation Barbarossa.
They also want Russia OFF middle east. ALL those campaigns are been masked with lieas, smoke and mirrors.
The truth is that is to remove not only Russian influence, but to remove all economic traces.
      It began before Gorbachev.
Gorbachev was the culprit of the campaign.
They were all fooled into believe, U.S may attack Russia. And de escalation was only possible with the final Soviet act. No more Soviet Uniona.
Who is Russia's no 1 enemy. U.S? no. Turkey? no.
Saudi? no. E.U? If you said YES , you correct.
E.U is the one that wants ALL European Russia. And then the rest be divided. japan is at it.

And Russia CAN NOT give any Kuril islands under ANY pretext.

PUTIN , The Kremlin should prohibit, contacts with PM's FM's , directly. All such contacts should be by Russia's PM and FM respectively. JAPAN'S Abe should talk with his counterpart.Putin is too busy at higher levels.

The Parties to this Treaty reaf rm their faith in the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and their desire to live in peace with all peoples and all governments.
They are determined to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilisation of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law. They seek to promote stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area.
They are resolved to unite their efforts for collective defence and for the preservation of peace and security. They therefore agree to this North Atlantic Treaty:

A shame NATO can't live up to their duties and obligations.
Expanding a military against a non aggressive nation is not a sign of peace.

What is there problem. In 1991, when the Warsaw Pact was being dismantled and the end of the Soviet Union was coming to an end. the Secretary of State, James Baker, promised Russia, NATO would not move an inch into Eastern Europe. Fast forward, 1999 first NATO bases in Eastern Europe, followed by 11 more. Now they want missile defence shields on every section of Russia's borders and still moan that Russia placed her nation far too close to their bases?

Just goes to show what an ex-Prime Minister of a non-nuclear nation is prepared to do, when he gets the job in NATO and has no understanding of nuclear weapons of mass destruction and just what Russia has in her arsenal?

cast235, Did you see the article on Fort Russ, where the US were already sending one of their fleets to Crimea, when the cookie monsters got rid of the legally elected President of Ukraine? The US were on their way to Sevastopol and ready to push Russia out of her port, together with trying to take control of the Russian Space Intelligence Centre, in Crimea. It was a seriously good article.

anne00marie, indeed NATO tricked and betrayed Russia. And as they continued to advance eastward, what did they expect Russia to do? Now that Russia has stopped listening to the lies, and matches aggression with strength, NATO actually thinks it can match Russian military power in the European theatre, apparently, if they just spend yet more money. Neither the us or Europeans have the character or the will to triumph over Russia. When was the last time a us general committed conventional forces to a fair fight? When was the last time a European general had a real army? I hope the Russian generals are confident, they have every right to be.
