GENEVA (Sputnik) — A decision on whether Kurds will take part in intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva will be made in the upcoming days, Syrian opposition figure Qadri Jamil said Wednesday.
The United Nations did not invite the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) to the ongoing intra-Syria talks.
"We met yesterday with [Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady] Gatilov. He said — and the Americans said the same thing — that we need to wait and be patient, everything will be decided in the upcoming days," Jamil told RIA Novosti.
He also noted that the Syrian opposition delegation formed following meetings in Moscow and Cairo would meet with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on February 4.
Syrian Kurds have been fighting against the Islamic State (ISIL), also known as Daesh, militant group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia, for years. The PYD claims that its participation in the intra-Syrian talks was blocked by Ankara because of its assumed links to the pro-independence Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant movement, which is active in southeastern Turkey.
In January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the intra-Syrian reconciliation talks would fail to reach a political settlement unless the Syrian Kurds were allowed to participate in the process.
