DES MOINES (Sputnik) — The sanctions policy toward Russia over the Ukrainian crisis requires open and frank discussions, US Presidential Hopeful Rick Santorum told Sputnik in Iowa ahead of the causes vote.

“I am concerned about Russia and its activities in Ukraine and central Europe, and we'd have to have some good candid conversations about what the consequences are for not respecting territorial borders and not respecting treaty and alliances that the United States and the West has with those countries,” Santorum said, commenting on what would be his sanctions policy toward Moscow.

The presidential candidate added, “We'll look forward to those conversations.”

When further asked whether he sees the sanctions eventually lifted, Santorum stated, “As I said we'll look forward to those conversations and see if we can reset expectations.”

The United States and the European Union imposed several rounds of sanctions targeting Russia's energy, banking and defense sectors after Crimea rejoined Russia and over Moscow's alleged involvement in the escalation of the crisis in southeastern Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations, stating that it is not party to the Ukrainian conflict.
