MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Lavrov also noted that it is unacceptable that certain Syrian opposition members are voicing preconditions to engage in dialogue with the government.

"An exchange of views took place on the Syrian issue. Both sides supported the efforts of Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria Staffan de Mistura to organize talks in Geneva between the Syrian government and opposition in order to achieve political settlement," the ministry said in a statement.

"The Russian minister again underlined the need for the Syrian opposition delegation to truly represent the entire range [of opposition forces], and pointed to the need to form a united front to fight Islamic State [Daesh] and other terrorist groups," the ministry said.

Both Russia and the United States consider Daesh (also known as Islamic State) a terrorist organization and carry out airstrikes against the group.
