MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The intra-Syrian talks, slated for January 29, have not been delayed, but full-scale negotiations between the country’s opposition and government will begin in two days, one of the leaders of the Syrian Popular Front for Change and Liberation told Sputnik.
"The talks in Geneva have not been delayed, but full-scale [negotiations] will begin in two days. Some meetings will take place on January 29. Yesterday the office of [UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan] de Mistura reached out to us and told us to delay the arrival of our delegates for two days," Qadri Jamil said.
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups.
In December 2015, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on settling the Syrian conflict, which reaffirmed the goals of the Vienna agreements to bring the entire spectrum of political groups in the crisis-torn country to the negotiating table and stated that the next round of the talks would take place in January, 2016.
The talks were originally scheduled for January 25, but de Mistura announced earlier this week that they would take place on January 29.
