A delegations of senior EU officials, including foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, will pay an official visit to Turkey later in January to discuss “common challenges,” the European Commission said in a statement on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the visit, Mogherini will attend the so-called High-Level Political Dialogue Meeting with the Turkish authorities in Ankara.

"The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the common challenges ahead as key partners and strategic allies in the region,” the statement reads.

The delegation, which will also include European Union's enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn and commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management Christos Stylianides, according to the statement.

Stylianides is expected to visit EU-funded humanitarian aid projects assisting refugees from Syria and Iraq, the statement said. Commissioner Stylianides will arrive in Turkey this weekend, the European Commission said, without specifying the exact dates of arrival in Turkey of the rest of the delegation.

Amid a massive migrant crisis, in October, Brussels pledged up to $3.4 billion in aid, simplified visa procedures and accelerated EU ascension procedures for Turkey in return for its cooperation in stopping the refugee flow to Europe.
