CAIRO (Sputnik) – Intra-Syrian talks in the Swiss city of Geneva should begin in due time under the auspices of the United Nations, Zeid noted.
"The official [Egypt’s Foreign Ministry] spokesman [Ahmed Abu Zeid] called on the UN envoy [for Syria Staffan de Mistura] to take all measures to ensure the necessary representation of all parts of the Syrian opposition and other patriotic forces that can influence the course of negotiations in Geneva, so that their results can be put into practice," the ministry said in a statement.
On Thursday, de Mistura told Sputnik that the date of the intra-Syrian talks had not been fixed so far.
The following day, the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) announced that the mush-anticipated talks between Damascus officials and Syrian opposition are likely to be postponed for a few days although the data is still set for January 25.
