London's report on the case of the death of former Russian intelligence officer Alexander Litvinenko should not worsen relations between Russia and the United Kingdom, UK Conservative Party lawmaker Daniel Kawczynski said Wednesday.

LONDON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Judge Sir Robert Owen will hand his report over to the British parliament.

"This situation has to be handled very delicately itself, with a great sensitivity, by the British government. Whatever the outcome is we cannot afford pore petrol onto the fire. The Litvinenko case was used by previous Labour government to put the anglo-Russian relation into the deep freeze and that was awful," Kawczynski told RIA Novosti in an interview.

The UK lawmaker also expressed hope that the British government would not use the report as an excuse for further disengagement with Russia.

Litvinenko fled from Russia to Britain in 2000. He died in 2006, three weeks after drinking tea with his former colleagues Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoi in central London.

Following his death, UK authorities claimed that Litvinenko's former colleagues had poisoned him with the radioactive isotope polonium-210. A public inquiry into Litvinenko's death was formally established by the UK government in July 2014.
