Cyprus President to Attend World Economic Forum in Davos in January
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will host a meeting on Cyprus at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort town of Davos on January 21, the United Nations announced in a statement.

"The Secretary-General will host a meeting in the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos with the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akinci, in order to take stock of the state-of-play in the [Cyprus Problem] negotiations," the Thursday statement says.

Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide will attend the January 21 meeting, according to the United Nations.

On Tuesday, the press office of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades confirmed his attendance at the World Economic Forum to Sputnik. Anastasiades was said to be expected to meet with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) leader Mustafa Akinci for peace negotiations in Davos.

The Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been partitioned since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied its northern part and proclaimed the TRNC nearly a decade later. Only Turkey recognizes the TRNC, also known as Northern Cyprus.

The Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting is traditionally held between late January and early February in Davos. The Swiss town is the venue for discussion of the most acute political and economic issues by representatives of dozens of countries.
