The Union of the Comoros has severed diplomatic relations with Iran and urged the Iranian ambassador to leave the country as soon as possible, local media reported Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Iranian ISNA news agency, the government of Comoros has taken the decision at the Wednesday government meeting in the wake of attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran.

In early January, a diplomatic row erupted in the Middle East, with Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia severing diplomatic ties with the region’s main Shiite power, Iran. The crisis came after protesters stormed the Saudi Arabian embassy in Iran in response to Riyadh's execution of a prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Saudi Arabia was joined by Bahrain, Sudan and Djibouti.
