The UN Security Council unanimously approved on Wednesday a resolution endorsing the agreement to form a national unity government in Libya.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The agreement was reached by conflicting factions in deeply fractured Libya last Thursday.

"The door is wide open for all those who still oppose the Libyan Political Agreement. All Libyans should play a role in the restarted Libyan transition. The opportunity to end the political and security crisis in Libya is now," UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler stressed on Wednesday.

Kobler also stated that the rivaling political factions in Libya need to step up their efforts in order to ensure stability in the country through the implementation of the newly-agreed peace deal.

"Libyan political actors must redouble efforts to swiftly implement the Libyan Political Agreement signed on 17 December in Skhirat. The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) looks forward to quickly engage with Libyan stakeholders in support of the future Government of National Accord."

France's Participation in Gaddafi Overthrow Mistake - Lawmaker

Libya has been in a state of turmoil for years after the Arab Spring protests in early 2011 led to a civil war and the overthrow of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.

There are two opposing governments in Libya: the internationally-recognized Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress (GNC). The split emerged after the 2011 civil war.

A UN-brokered dialogue on national reconciliation in Libya has continued for almost a year.
