UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — On Sunday, three missiles launched from southern Lebanon hit northern Israel, to which the Israeli military responded with artillery fire. The incident comes after Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah group member, Samir Kuntar, was killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike that targeted a residential building near the Syrian capital of Damascus.
"The Secretary-General is greatly concerned over yesterday’s firing of rockets within UNIFIL’s [the UN Interim Force in Lebanon] area of operations from the area of Al-Hinniyah, in the vicinity of Tyr, towards Israel, which is a serious violation of resolution 1701 (2006)," the statement published Monday reads.
The UN mission in Lebanon is investigating the circumstances of the incident together with the armed forces of Lebanon and Israel.
The 1701 resolution calls on Israel and Lebanon to maintain ceasefire since the 2006 conflict between the two states.
