Russia has an opportunity to help the Libyan authorities make their own decisions on finding ways to resolve the crisis in the country, the foreign minister of Libya'a self-proclaimed General National Congress (GNC) in Tripoli told Sputnik on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — It is expected that the Libyan self-proclaimed government's delegation will hold a meeting at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

"We believe that Russia has the opportunity to help the legitimate institutions in Libya to make their own decisions on how to resolve the crisis in the country," Ali Abu Zaakouk said.

Terrorism Antidote: Libya Mulls Requesting Russia for Anti-Daesh Airstrikes

Since 2011, the country has been in the state of civil war, which was aggravated by an international intervention, involving predominantly NATO member states. The intervention ended with a decisive NATO victory, the escalation of the conflict in the country and the subsequent murder of the country's long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi.

At present, there are two rival governments operating in the country, one based in the city of Tobruk, while another, formed by self-proclaimed authorities, is currently in control of the capital Tripoli and adjacent western areas. The internationally recognized Tobruk government is fighting numerous militias, including offshoots of Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia.
