Le Drian was in Moscow on a working visit in line with November 26 agreements between Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Francois Hollande.
"During the discussion, which was held for an hour and a half in the business-like and transparent atmosphere, the ministers focused on the prospects of coordinating the efforts by the defense ministries of both countries in the fight against global terrorism," the ministry said in statement.
"The sides agreed that they share a common enemy — Islamic State (Daesh in Arabic) — and reaffirmed their readiness to jointly counter the IS threat."
Shoigu and Le Drian also agreed the visit of Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces, Gen. Pierre de Villiers, to Moscow in the near future to continue discussion of bilateral military cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
The Russian and French defense ministers noted that they share concern over the expansion of activities of Daesh in North Africa.
"The ministers discussed the situation in Libya. They noted the full coincidence of opinions on the situation in the country and expressed concern about the ISIL activities intensification in the North African region."
