The United States should use its influence at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continue economically assisting Ukraine, US Senate Ukraine Caucus Chairman Rob Portman told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — On December 8, the IMF Board of Directors voted for reforming its lending policies, allowing countries to continue borrowing money even if they default on bilateral obligations to creditors.

"I do think we ought to be helping Ukraine at a difficult time, some of that is us [the United States] directly, some of that is through the IMF where we play a bigger role," Portman said on Thursday.

He added that the United States should play a "continued role in supporting Ukraine economically."

The reform allows the IMF to continue Ukraine's $40 billion bailout program even after a potential default by Kiev on its $3 billion Eurobond debt to Russia.
