LONDON (Sputnik) — Cameron pledged in the election campaign ahead of his Conservative Party's victory in the May parliamentary elections to hold a nationwide in/out referendum by the end of 2017 on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union. He intends, however, to first try to renegotiate EU-UK relations before staging the vote.
"The Prime Minister and the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, discussed the UK renegotiation in a bilateral meeting after the EU-Turkey summit. They agreed that we continue to make good progress. While some areas are more difficult than others, discussions are ongoing with Member States to find solutions and agree reforms in all four areas outlined in the PM’s letter to the European Council President," the prime minister's office said in a statement.
