Iran’s Parliament Speaker said Turkey made a big mistake shooting down a Russian bomber and the US made an even ‘bigger mistake’ backing it.

Ali Larijani made the comments during a meeting with Luxembourger Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn in Tehran on Wednesday.

Larijani expressed criticism on the stance taken by the US President Barack Obama and his administration, saying, “Obama’s support of this action is an even bigger mistake that further intensifies the conflicts in the region,” Press TV reported.

Following the downing of the Russian Su-24 US President Barack Obama expressed support for Turkey claiming that the fighter jet had violated the Turkish airspace. “Turkey, like every country, has a right to defend its territory and its airspace,” Obama said.

President Vladimir Putin referred to the incident as "a stab in the back" committed by "accomplices of terrorists."

Russia has been actively engaged in counterterrorism efforts in Syria since late September. Thanks to Russian assistance, Damascus-led forces managed to take certain areas earlier held by militants under control.

Talking about the terrorism in the Middle East Larijani said some regional and Western countries support these groups supposing that they can use the conflicts in the region to achieve their own objectives, Press TV noted.

Luxembourger Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said solving the crises in the Middle East is of greatest importance, as any insecurity in the region would endanger the security of European countries.
