WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that he had always supported Russia's efforts in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIL) militant group.
Russia has been a "constructive partner in Vienna in trying to create a political transition" in Syria, the US President said on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Manila as quoted by the White House.
Obama said that in his opinion, Russia could shift attention from support to Syrian President Bashar Assad to stronger fight against ISIL.
Military cooperation between Russia and the United States may be extended if the parties are able to overcome their differences on Syria, Obama said.
