Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced the resignation of her government at the first meeting of the Polish Sejm.

WARSAW (Sputnik) — Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced, on Thursday, the resignation of her government at the first meeting of the Polish Sejm since the parliamentary elections, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

On October 25, parliamentary elections were held in Poland. The Law and Justice Party won the elections, gaining almost 38 percent of the vote. This is the first time in Poland's modern history that a single party has won a majority in parliament sufficient to form a homogeneous government, without recourse to a coalition.

In accordance with the Constitution of Poland, the current prime minister, who represents the Civic Platform party, which had been in power since 2007, has to resign at the first meeting of the new Sejm, or the lower house of parliament.

President Andrzej Duda is expected to officially accept the Kopacz government’s resignation later on Thursday in the presidential palace.
