Ankara is ready to make every effort to achieve progress in the country's accession to the European Union, Turkish Prime Miniser Ahmet Davutoglu said Wednesday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the Turkish Prime Minister met with the First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

"We expect that the EU to take the necessary steps in this regard through opening new negotiation chapters. Turkey is ready to make an all-out effort to achieve progress in its accession bid," Davutoglu was quoted as saying by the Anadolu agency.

Turkey applied to join the 28-nation European Union in 1987. Negotiations on its accession to the bloc began in 2005.

The parties have agreed on 14 out of 35 chapters of EU accession negotiations so far. Currently, four chapters are being negotiated and 17 still remain blocked.
