ATHENS (Sputnik) — Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tspiras in a phone call with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu confirmed that he would make an official visit to Turkey, the prime minister’s press service said in a statement on Monday.

During the recent session of the UN General Assembly, Davutoglu invited Tsipras to visit Turkey to discuss the cooperation between two countries. The invitation was accepted during the phone conversation.

“The dates of the visit are investigated, the visit will be made in near future,” the statement said.

Tsipras also said about the necessity to preserve diplomatic channels between two countries, especially taking into consideration the regional problems, such as the influx of refugees arriving in Greece through the Turkish territory, the statement added.

Greece, along with other EU member states, is facing a refugee crisis that it being called the worst since World War II as some 710,000 of migrants arrived in Europe this year, mostly by sea, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In October, approximately 160,000 migrants and refugees crossed into Greece from Turkey, therefore the whole number of sea arrivals in Greece exceeded 560,000, according to the IOM data.
