MADRID (Sputnik) — Last week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow was holding talks on a daily basis with "almost the whole spectrum" of the Syrian opposition factions as part of a reconciliation process in the country.
"The Russian foreign minister is doing an incredible job, making real organization of Geneva III conference or whatever is necessary to defeat the Islamic State and restore peace and stability in Syria," the vice-chair of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs said.
Couso recognizes that the Russian air campaign in the Syria differs from Washington's actions in the region as the US-led coalition had been unable to achieve during its ongoing operation, which had begun over a year ago.
"This demonstrates that there was a deliberate attempt by the United States and its allies to destabilize the region," he explained.
Except for anti-ISIL efforts, Moscow has promoted a political settlement in Syria, hosting in 2015 two rounds of intra-Syrian talks between representatives of the Syrian government and the country's opposition. The warring parties have also met twice over the last three years at UN-backed conferences in Geneva.
Last month, Syrian President Bashar Assad said that a third meeting in Moscow was essential for the success of the international talks on the Syrian political settlement in Geneva.
