The leaders of Israel and Palestine were invited to join negotiations of the Middle East Quartet to swiftly resolve the conflict between the two states, EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini said Tuesday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — A new wave of violence has erupted in recent weeks, in which dozens have been killed and injured in stabbings in Jerusalem, the West Bank and across Israel, prompting fears of a third intifada, or Palestinian uprising.

"I’ve asked both [Israeli] Prime Minister Netanyahu and [Palestinian] President Abbas to receive the Quartet invoice [invitation] in the coming days, not weeks, to start working together on concrete steps that can be immediately taken on the ground to de-escalate on the one side and improve the living conditions of the people," Mogherini told members of the European Parliament in her address.

The Quartet on the Middle East, established in 2002, comprises the envoys of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia, who are involved in mediating the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Palestine seeks the recognition of its independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip — lands occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.
