Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said that international talks on Syria have ‘some progress’, but the final agreement requires further negotiations.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — International talks on Syria have ‘some progress’, but the final agreement requires further negotiations, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said Sunday.

Earlier in the day, Al-Jubeir arrived in Cairo to discuss with the Egyptian leadership the most pressing regional issues.

"I believe that some progress has been made, common understanding on how to tackle the Syrian crisis has been reached. But I cannot say that we have reached an agreement. We need further consultations and negotiations in order to reach it," Al-Jubeir said during a press conference.

According to Al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia backs a Geneva communique on Syria that calls for the political settlement of the Syrian conflict, according to which, any political solution should be based on dialogue between the country’s political forces in adherence to international law.

On Friday, Russian, US, Saudi Arabian and Turkish foreign ministers discussed specific ideas on the situation in Syria during their meeting in the Austrian capital.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country's government fighting against opposition factions and terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State (ISIL) militant group.

Russia has been repeatedly promoting a political solution to the ongoing civil war in Syria and has hosted two rounds of intra-Syrian peace talks.

On September 30, Russia began launching precision airstrikes at ISIL militant group positions in Syria at the request of President Bashar Assad.

Since the beginning of the air campaign, Russian Aerospace Forces have carried out some 934 strikes, killing several hundred militants and destroying dozens of command centers and depots used by the terrorists.
